France 2008

GR 13 - Morvan

  • October 2008, with Ingeborg (68 km in 4 days.   1   1   1   )

  • 4 days through the Morvan forests. Ingeborg's first longer trekking. Despite the easy terrain and shorter duration, it had all the elements of a longer hike. Bad weather, wild camping, gite d'etappe, getting lost, eating wild mushrooms. A bit of suffering and a bit of joy. Some dried food, some French cuisine. Sometimes it was so wet and cold that I expected that Ingeborg would never hike again. But the bug had bitten, and we could keep on hiking forever. The end was remarkable. We got stuck on the campground at lac-des-Settons. No buses back to civilisation, we didn't know how to get back to Vezelay where our car was. Then the camping man said that his friend could offer us a ride to Salieu, and there we decided to hitchhike. We got picked up by a hippy van, with 2 hippies and a dog. They decided to bring us all the way to the campsite in Vezelay, and that also is what hiking in France often brings. Unexpected help by amazing people, this wasn't the first time.
