This empty boreal forest has a uneasy edge. This is taiga north of the arctic circle, deadly in winter, and this far into the dark season we felt the winter approaching. Bad weather was always close, which could turn the partly dry bogs into dangerous swampland. And the wind in this open country was severe. We played it safe, walked only a few hours a day, and let ourselves be overwhelmed by the wild beauty of this place.

The PlanThere was no plan. Well, the plan was a totally different National Park in central Sweden, but we were driven far north by bad weather. Only after we crossed the arctic circle the rain stopped. And there we found ourselves at the edge of Saltfjellet/Svartisen National Park. I bought a map, looked for a feasable 4 or 5 day route and we just hiked in... The arctic scenery was breathtaking, but the combination of exposure and windy cold weather 'encouraged' us to a slightly less ambitious route and just make camp where we found shelter. This worked perfectly and we had a great 4 day hike. |
